Flageolet Angel - Edward Burne-Jones

The Flageolet Angel tapestry, sometimes called An Angel tapestry, is a reproduction of an original painting by Sir Edward Burne-Jones (1833 - 1898). A major force in the Pre-Raphaelite movement Burne-Jones was a painter, illustrator and designer of considerable influence in 19th century England. A close friend of William Morris his passion was the restoration of the purity of medieval art, with its preoccupations with sentimentality and overt religious symbolism.

Flageolet Angel, painted by Burne-Jones in 1878, is a good example of this style and demonstrates his considerable technical skill and accomplished use of colour. It was created in watercolour, gouache and gold paint on paper and was mounted on canvas. Today it is displayed at the Sudley Art Gallery, Merseyside.
