Hunters in the Snow
The Hunters in the Snow tapestry wall-hanging is from an original oil painting by Pieter Bruegel (1525 - 1569) called The Hunters in the Snow. Painted in 1565 in the style now known as Flemish Renaissance it depicts a winter hunt in Belgium. Bruegel was considered the greatest Flemish painter of the 16th century, with his works encompassing a wide range of subject matter including biblical scenes, mythology and social satire. However it was his sympathetic portrayal of nature that he is best remembered for and this was his greatest inspiration. Often portraying common everyday scenes and peasant life his work contains an unusual combination of technical clarity and insight into 16th century life. The original of this work is currently displayed at Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna.
