Godfrey de Bouillon
Godfrey de Bouillon (1058-1100), Duke of Lower Lorraine, was one of the leaders of the First Crusade. When the Pope issued his summons to the Crusade in 1096, Godfrey joined the French knights leaving for the Holy Land, together with his brothers Eustace and Baldwin with an army made up of Walloons, Flemings, and Germans. On July 15, 1099, his soldiers were the first to break through to Jerusalem, and took part in the subsequent battles with the Jewish and Muslim residents of the city.
On conquering the city Godfrey was awarded the title of Defender of the Holy Sepulchre, a title he chose over King due, it is said, to religious piety and the belief that he was the custodian of Jerusalem for all of Christendom. For the rest of the single year in which he held this title, Godfrey managed to extend the boundaries of the Crusader state and to lay the foundations of its organization. After his one year of rule, he grew sick and died and was buried in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, succeeded by his brother Baldwin.
Godfrey was distinguished for his piety and simplicity and, as the first Latin ruler of Jerusalem, he became the central figure of various legends, with his deeds being glorified in the Chansons de Geste.
