Ehret die Frauen - Honour the Women
Ehret die Frauen tapestry was designed by noted Pre-Raphaelite tapestries artist Marianne Stokes (1855 - 1927). The name Ehret die frauen, meaning "Honour the Women", was inspired by Friedrich von Schiller's 1796 poem Wurde der frauen (Woman's worth). Woven for Morris & Co by John Martin and Gorden Berry in 1912 it shows a group of figures representing (from left to right): Courage, Caring, Love, Wisdom and Fidelity. The verse, designed in gothic type, reads Ehret die frauen sie flechten und meben • himmlische rosen ins irdische leben (Honor the women! They braid and weave Heavenly roses into earthly life).
A good example of a Pre-Raphaelite tapestry this piece is very detailed, employs vivid colors, and uses weaving techniques to capture some of the depth of expression many Pre-Raphaelite's admired in medieval art. The original is on display at the Whitworth Art Gallery, Manchester, England. This Arts and crafts tapestry is woven in France in 100% cotton and is lined, with a rod pocket for easy wall-hanging. We supply instructions for hanging a tapestry with your order.
