La Joute tapestry
La Joute tapestry is half of A La Cour du Roi tapestry, also known as Before the Tournament tapestry. This colourful wall tapestry is a modern design but it depicts a scene that was very common in the medieval era, a jousting tournament. The other half is La Cour tapestry, making a fine pair of matching tapestries.
The first jousting tournament on record took place in 1066 and was accredited to a French man, Godfrey de Preuilly. During the 10th and 15th century jousting became increasingly popular tournaments providing the opportunity for knights to keep themselves at their physical peak and to develop their fighting skills in preparation for war. In the early days of jousting the knights would often fight to the death but in later years, especially after The Statute of Arms for Tournaments Act of 1292, chivalry, showmanship and ceremony became more the order of the day. This fine quality French wall tapestry woven by Jules Pansu in 95% cotton and it is lined and has a tunnel - we enclose a guide to hanging tapestries with your order.
