The
Bayeux tapestry is the epic embroidered textile detailing one of history's
most famous events, the Battle of Hastings. Fought on October 14, 1066, William
the Conqueror set sail to defeat King Harold and seize the English throne.
Since this was the last time Britain was conquered by a foreign force the
event has enjoyed considerable gravitas, giving rise to an almost unprecedented
level of interest in a battle that was small compared to many others before
or since.
In 1070, shortly after the battle, a wall tapestry was commissioned by Bishop Odo of Bayeux, William the Conqueror's half-brother. Designed and manufactured in Kent, England the Bayeux Tapestry is 230ft long and 20 inches high, and survives to this day in a specially constructed museum in Bayeux, Northern France.
With the original tapestry so massive in length historians have traditionally split the work into panels, each defined by a scene communicated by the original artists. These vary in size but are all grouped around an event or concept.
The following are selected scenes from this massive tapestry.
Please note: The tapestries below are presented in chronological order as they appear in the original Bayeux Tapestry.
