The Arts and Crafts Movement of the second half of the 19th century produced fresh design ideas often based on medieval themes. It was a reaction against fussy Victorianism and emphasised natural beauty using traditional craftsmanship. It revolutionized painting, furniture, wallpaper, architecture, fabric, printing, carpets, ceramics, stained glass, jewelry and, of course, tapestries.

Just as a group of artists were later to cross-fertilise their ideas in Impressionism so a variety of artisans shared in developing these new ideas. Prominent among them was William Morris (1834-96), partly because of his energy and partly because he led the way personally in many of these applied arts. For example, he had seen French tapestry weaving at Les Gobelins and was appalled at how they had, in my words, “lost their way”. So he read a 14th century French manual on tapestry weaving, built a loom and had it installed in his bedroom. We have this to thank for such beautiful works as The Woodpecker tapestry.

The influence of Pre-Raphaelites paintings, from 1848 onwards, can also be seen in some Arts and Crafts tapestries above including those designed by Edward Burne-Jones, a long-time friend of William Morris. Some of The Tapestry House collection here are designed and originally woven by Morris and others woven by Morris & Co into the early 20th century. All are now woven by long-established European weavers and are lined, having a rod pocket for easy hanging. We supply all orders with instructions for the hanging and care of your Arts and Crafts tapestry wallhanging.
