Art nouveau - Winter

Art nouveau - Winter tapestry wall hanging

This chenille tapestry is from a series of four, representing the seasons, and it depicts an idealized female figure personifying winter. The figure is seen shrouded in a winter cloak and hood, protecting her from the elements, only the sillhouette of her form on display. The scene is set against a forest, with the dying winter remnants of the woods around her, complimented by a detailed border typical of the Art Nouveau style. This tapestry is characteristic of that style, with bold sweeping lines that create a natural flow, complimented with a sharpness in its detail that imbibes a pleasing overall effect. Despite the subject matter the tapestry still exudes warmth and charm, and is an outstanding example of the intricacy of Art Nouveau design.

It is based on the original design by Art Nouveau artist Alphonse Mucha (1860 - 1939). A Czech living in Paris he pioneered the Art Nouveau movement and inspired a generation of artists towards a more dynamic and fresh approach to art. The piece is one from his many Panneaux, a series of works designed around a central theme, such as the four seasons. These were immensely popular when they first appeared and encompassed the full range of materials and media used at the time, including postcards, textiles, poster art and paintings. First coming to prominence in the late 19th century, the Art Nouveau movement was to last just over 30 years. It defined the entire pre-war era and set a new standard in design, dynamism and technique much copied, but never really surpassed.

This tapestry is unlined and has a rod sleeve for ease of hanging.

Chenille is a popular fabric and has many uses. As a soft and supple material it can be used for a variety of purposes, including; tapestries and wall hangings, throws, bed covers, upholstery and curtains. Chenille can be difficult to manufacture and takes a great deal of care in its production. The thread is produced by weaving fabric into tightly twisted yarns which are then combined with shorter yarns to provide a pile that protrudes in all directions, giving the final material its distinctive chenille feel and flexibility. These are then used in the normal way to produce the finished fabric. Many fabrics can be used in this process although these are typically: cotton, silk, wool, viscose, polypropylene or acrylic.
