This piece shows a detail from the La Dame a la Licorne series of tapestries from the 15th century. The lion was a popular beast in medieval art and, like so much from the era, it was used to symbolise aspirational virtues. In medieval times the lion was seen to have three natures, each symbolising elements of Christ's character. The first element of its nature, that a lion, when it senses it is being tracked by hunters, erases its tracks with its tail is seen to symbolise Christ who hid his divinity from those around him. Secondly, a lion was believed to always sleep with its eyes open, representing Christ dead after the crucifiction but still spiritually alive in his followers. Finally lion cubs were believed to be born dead, with the lion rescucitating them by roaring over them, a symbol for God the father waking Jesus after three days in his tomb. This tapestry is lined and has a tunnel for ease of hanging.
