Iris portiere

Iris portiere tapestry wall hanging

The Iris Portiere tapestry is of a tranquil river setting, complete with flowers and foliage at the edge of a calm river. It is framed with leaves from a tree, similar to verdure style tapestries, and shows a detailed background lending it depth.

The portiere style originated as a type of textile to hang over a doorway. It originated from Eastern countries and, although it's not known when it was introduced into Europe, it is believed to be at least 1500 years ago. The label "portiere" is a truncation of rideau de porte, French for "door curtain".

Over time the style has developed into a more elaborate form and is now used in a variety of ways. This includes wall tapestries, where the portiere style is taken to mean any long narrow wall textile. It is used in a number of different tapestry designs and has evolved into an impressive and striking style of its own.

The detailed landscape transfers well to wall tapestries with the warm, natural colors really coming alive particularly with the detailed foliage.

This Belgian tapestry is lined and has a tunnel for ease of hanging.
