Virgin Mary Tapestry

This tapestry depicts the Virgin Mary and has intricate details, which is further embossed and enriched by the antique gold threads. Byzantine art always depicted the Virgin Mary in an iconic light. During this time, it was also usual for her to be spoken of, and referred to as, “The Mother of God”. In this way, it was emphasized that Jesus was, in fact, God on earth. Being the mother of God, it would seem appropriate to depict her as an Angel. This kind of imagery also relays the idea that the conception was immaculate. The warm rose pinks, soft blues, and subtle burnt gold and browns are very typical within Byzantine Art, and into the Gothic period. This is a very simple composition, depicting one of the most important icons within Christendom. Her face is solemn, contemplative, as Mary considers the vast task and responsibility God has bestowed upon her. Her arms crossed over her heart is also symbolic. The composition is structured geometrically, as are most classic works.  This can be seen from the relationships between the curve of the arch above her head, to the curve of her swollen stomach, and even within the flow of her robes.  A successful, and highly traditional, religious composition. This tapestry is lined and has a tunnel for ease of hanging.
