Nativity Tapestry

This Italian nativity tapestry depicts the birth of Jesus Christ. In the foreground, the donkey and the bull look on, clearly setting the stable scene. Above, the bright Star of David shines over the Virgin Mary and baby Jesus. Both are bathed with golden halos, as are the three Angels to the right. The three angels are clearly symbolic of the three wise men, who were told by the Angels to follow the star. Within the composition, it is clear that the Artist has made great effort to ensure the viewer understands the narrative. Unlike the woman to the left, Mary’s clothing is rich and ornate, to reflect Mary’s importance and stature.

Depicting the Virgin Mary this way, in an iconic form, was very typical within Byzantine Art. The composition is a perfect example of Gothic art, from around the thirteenth century. The rich use of gold also reflects the Byzantine era, which met it’s end when Constantinople was taken in 1453. Early Christian art usually depicts narratives from the Old and New Testament, and it was always typological in nature. The warm pinks, reds and soft blues make the composition extremely easy on the eye. This nativity tapestry is lined and has a tunnel for ease of hanging.
