The Oath Tapestry

This tapestry depicts a very intriguing narrative. In the right hand corner, the words ‘Il Giuramento’ are inscribed, which means ‘The Oath’ in Italian. An oath is a promise, and, as the composition clearly indicates, this group of men are making a promise upon the sword, and in front of the Holy Cross. There are ten men crossing their swords together. Without doubt, they are now sworn together as comrades. There are four holy men within the circle, clearly identifiable by their clothes. To the right, two noble men together, defined by their rich attire. To the left, three more men look on, who have a large text in front of them. In this composition, the presence of the Holy Cross above the men, implicates that they are invoking God as their witness. As it is always the case, when an oath is sworn in front of it, or upon the gospels. Is the text that the three men have in front of them the Gospels? Or, is this a written testimonial of the promise being made? As well as being aesthetically pleasing, this composition invokes much thought. Making it an extremely interesting and clever piece. This tapestry is lined and has a tunnel for ease of hanging.
