This tapestry is one in a series known collectively as the Triumph of Apollo. It was designed by Bernard van Orley (1491-1541), a much respected Flemish Renaissance painter and draughtsman, and also a leading designer of tapestries. Van Orley started designing tapestries in his youth, but after 1530 he seemed to have stopped painting altogether and applied himself solely to cartoons for tapestries and designs for stained-glass windows. The Triumph of Apollo series was produced in the workshops of Leyniers in the early part of the 18th century. In this piece we see Apollo, the god of music and poetry, among the Muses, it is highly allegorical and classically styled. This tapestry is lined and has a tunnel for ease of hanging.
