The Verdure au Chateau tapestry, sometimes called The Royal Palace, is part of the series Tentures de Maisons Royales (Tapestries of the Royal Households) commissioned by Louis XIV in 1670. Designed by Charles Le Brun (1619 - 1690) each of the twelve pieces featured a residence owned by the king and each represented a month of the year. The piece above shows the view from a balcony in the Château , with courtiers and a stage coach seen riding through the grounds. An extremely prolific artist and designer Le Brun rose to become Premier Paintre du roi (the kings primary painter) and over a 30 year period did more than any other to create the lavish and flamboyant sense of style of the Baroque period associated with the reign of the Sun king, Louis XIV. This fine French tapestry is lined and has a tunnel for ease of hanging.
