This tapestry depicts a coat of arms, dating from the 1550. It was designed by Aernet van Loo for the De Nagera family from Burges. Since antiquity humans have sought out ways of distinguishing themselves, whether as individuals, groups or nationalities. The rise of nations in particular led to war and the subsequent need to identify oneself as distinct from the enemy. By the Middle Ages, and the advent of heavy armor that hid a combatants features, there was even greater need to have some means of identifying individuals, especially from a distance. This need for a unique symbol eventually developed into an insignia worn on a shield or banner and, by the time of the crusades, was also worn as a garment over the chainmail known as a surcoat, hence the name coat of arms. By the 15th and 16th centuries the development of these symbols took on greater emphasis, with families developing elaborate insignia that were passed through generations, often used to imply the dynastic qualities of families. By this time heraldry was so important a special group was formed to record and manage this, known as the Herald's College, an institution that survives to this day in Britain. This tapestry is lined and has a tunnel for ease of hanging.
