Chateau of Chenonceau

Chateau of Chenonceau tapestry wall hanging

This French tapestry features the famous château that lies in the Loire Valley on the river Cher, the Chateau of Chenonceau. Construction began in the 16th century by Thomas Bohier (1465 - 1524), revenue collector for King Francis I. In 1535 Francis I took possession of the castle in lieu of debts, and by 1547 his son, King Henri II, then passed it to Diane de Poitiers, who extended the structure across the river Cher. The castle was then shaped and extended over the years by its famous female occupants including, Catherine Briconnet, Catherine de Medici, Louise de Lorraine, Madam Dupin and Madam Pelouze, so much so it is often called Château de Femmes (Castle of Ladies). Today, with the exception of the Palace of Versailles, Chenonceau is the most visited castle in France. This French wall tapestry is lined and has a tunnel for ease of hanging.
