This piece is a from the original painting by Jan Brueghel the Elder (1568 - 1625) and is entitled Sacrifice to Cybele. Showing Cybele, the Goddess of the Earth, with cherubs against a lush and highly detailed woodland background, it is typical of the style of the artist. A noted flower painter and landscape artist Brueghel found nature his main inspiration. Although he painted many religious and allegorical scenes it was his ability to combine his keen observations of nature with imaginative and often fantasy subject matter that he is best remembered for. It bears resemblances to later Francois Boucher tapestries. This French tapestry is lined and has a tunnel for ease of hanging.
