This portiere tapestry depicts a detailed woodland setting in late summer. Our attention is drawn immediately to the foreground with ivy wrapped lazily around the bark of the tree and a lush floral layer covering the roots. In the background we see darker trees, hinting at the onset of fall, creating a warm depth to the piece. The tapestry is framed with a delicate detailed border that adds charm to an already refined example of tapestry art.
The portiere style originated as a type of textile to hang over a doorway. It originated from Eastern countries and, although it's not known when it was introduced into Europe, it is believed to be at least 1500 years ago. The label "portiere" is a truncation of rideau de porte, French for "door curtain".
Over time the style has developed into a more elaborate form and is now used in a variety of ways. This includes wall tapestries, where the portiere style is taken to mean any long narrow wall textile. It is used in a number of different tapestry designs and has evolved into an impressive and striking style of its own.
