Europa Regina

This wall tapestry is a reproduction of one of cartographies enduring oddities: Europa Regina by Johannes Bucius and dates from around 1537. It artistically represents Europe, Queen of the World, in the form of a crowned woman holding an orb and sceptre and was included in Sebastian Münster's (1544 - 1628) immensely popular volume of maps Cosmographia Universalis published around 1580.

Spain forms the head with the crown, France and Germany the neck and bust, Denmark the right arm, Italy the left and Great Britain as the flag. Much of the figure is a flowing robe with Greece and Russia at the feet. The colors are vivid and designed to delineate the various countries represented. It also features a great deal of decorative elements designed to capture known geographical elements, such as mountain ranges and forests.

Some have argued that rather than representing a woman the figure is actually Charles V of Spain, representing a Europe controlled by the Spanish (Spain being the crown).

It is an impressive example of the artistry of early mapmaking, and continues to delight even with its skewed view of geography.

This tapestry is lined and has a tunnel for ease of hanging.
