This piece depicts Neuschwanstein castle, built between 1869 and 1886. It was built for the Bavarian King Ludwig II (1845 - 1886) high above the Alpsee lake near the Alps, and is designed in a neo-romanesque style. The exterior exhibits a mock-medieval look, with turrets and arches and to the modern eye seems almost fairy-tale like. The interior ranges from gothic to byzantine, and was considered revolutionary for its time as it included running water, flushing toilets and hot water for the kitchens. A great lover of theater and music Ludwig commissioned a series of murals depicting Wagner's operas which can be seen throughout the castle. The level of craftmanship is astonishing, for example the king's bedroom took a team of 14 carpenters over 4 years to complete, and the entire structure, inside and out, is truly a one-off. This tapestry is lined and has a tunnel for ease of hanging.
