The Park

This verdure tapestry features an elaborate park in fall. The dominant foreground feature is a tree, common with many verdure designs. Framing this we see a variety of plant life as well as exotic birds. The middle ground is dominated by an architectural folly, hemmed in by the plants of the park. To the right we see a waterfall combining with the distant hills in the background to create depth.

The word "verdure" comes from the old French word verd, meaning green, itself a corruption of the original Latin word viridis. Historians are unsure when the first verdure tapestries were made, but by the 16th century they had risen to become a popular form of textile art in their own right.

Initially formal verdure's owed their distinct design to the use of detailed foliage alone, however over time these came to incorporate landscapes and wildlife into them making them more like the form we associate with the name now. One notable feature of all verdures is their attention to detail and their striking use of natural colors to create a strong visual impact.

Unlike other well known tapestry motifs, such as Mille Fleurs, verdures are works of art in their own right, with the central and ornamental elements making up the focus of the work rather than just a decorative backdrop. Their legendary detail, elaborate designs and craftsmanship were the reason they so often graced the walls of the French aristocracy in the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries. An appeal that has not lessened over time.

The above tapestry is an excellent example of the depth and warmth of verdure tapestries and contains an impressive amount of detail. The colors and the various foreground and background features combine to create an illusion of depth that compliments the richness of the woven fabric.

This tapestry is lined and has a tunnel for ease of hanging.
