Designed by Jean-Baptiste Monnoyer (1636 - 1699) this tapestry features an Asian elephant and is designed in the "grotesque" style that enjoyed favor in France during the late 17th and early 18th century. Inspired by the archeological find of Roman Emperor Nero's buried Domus Aurea (Golden House), artists soon adopted the style of the murals found there, adapting and extending the original Roman designs to the more exaggerated style seen on this piece. The tapestries were produced by the Beauvais Tapestry Manufactory and were very popular in their time. This tapestry is lined and has a tunnel for ease of hanging.
