This tapestry is a reproduction of the original series of posters advertising the Moulin Rouge by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (1864 - 1901). Correctly titled Moulin Rouge: La Goulue and designed in 1891 it depicts the main attraction at the club, the dancer La Goulue (the glutton). The poster was required to be flashy and striking, a reflection of the club itself, and succeeds in this due to its use of strong colors and stylized visuals. We see La Goulue (Louise Weber) as the centre of attention with the audience, and even her dancing partner (Valentin le Désossé), in silhouette, a technique that Lautrec uses to direct the viewers attention to the main attraction.
Shocking in its day the poster was one of a series that helped set the tone of Bourgoisie Paris and to a great extent reflects how this section of society viewed itself. This tapestry is lined and has a tunnel for ease of hanging.
