Forest Splendour

This wall tapestry depicts a lush, tempting landscape in the style of a verdure. Its warm tones and vivid color palette give the impression of the last days of summer. In the foreground are trees, flowers and wildlife, complemented by the hazy background. Like all verdure tapestries it utilizes a natural color palette inspired by nature creating a calming, serene effect.

The word "verdure" comes from the old French word verd, meaning green, itself a corruption of the original Latin word viridis. Historians are unsure when the first verdure tapestries were made, but by the 16th century they had risen to become a popular form of textile art in their own right.

Initially formal verdure's owed their distinct design to the use of detailed foliage alone, however over time these came to incorporate landscapes and wildlife into them making them more like the form we associate with the name now. One notable feature of all verdures is their attention to detail and their striking use of natural colors to create a strong visual impact.

Unlike other well known tapestry motifs, such as Mille Fleurs, verdures are works of art in their own right, with the central and ornamental elements making up the focus of the work rather than just a decorative backdrop. Their legendary detail, elaborate designs and craftsmanship were the reason they so often graced the walls of the French aristocracy in the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries. An appeal that has not lessened over time.

The above tapestry captures much of the beauty of the original verdure design, lending it depth and warmth. Combined with the calming effect of the colors it has an ability to mesh well with almost any kind of interior décor, from traditional to contemporary.
