This piece is from a series of nine
tapestries by Flemish artist Jan Cornelisz Vermeyen (1500 - 1559). The theme of the tapestries is taken from Ovid's Metamorphoses and features the gods Vertumnus, god of the changing seasons, and Pamona, the goddess of fruits and harvests. Vertumnus, in love with Pamona, visits her garden in a series of disguises all of which fail until he appears dressed as an old woman and tells her the heartbreaking story of the tragic love affair between Iphis and Anaxarete. Vertumnus then removes his disguise and embraces the distracted and softened Pamona. The
tapestry above sees Vertumnus dressed as a gardener and is the fifth in the series. As with all the pieces in the series it is richly detailed, showing an elaborate garden with extensive foliage, and a series of decorated colonnades. The original can be seen in the Calouste Gulbenkian museum, Lisbon, Portugal, with the others in the Vienna Museum. This tapestry is lined and has a tunnel for ease of hanging.
