The Garden at Versailles tapestry is part of the series Tentures de Maisons Royales commissioned by Louis XIV in 1670. Designed by Charles Le Brun (1619 - 1690) each of the twelve pieces featured a residence owned by the king and each represented a month of the year. The piece above shows the view from looking into the gardens at Versailles, with courtiers seen riding in the background. In the foreground we can see an ornate urn with a floral arrangement complimented by fruit. The colonnades have further floral details, climbing ivy, and the piece is framed with elaborate border. An extremely prolific artist and designer Le Brun rose to become Premier Paintre du roi and over a 30 year period did more than any other to create the flamboyant sense of style of the Baroque period associated with the reign of the Sun king, Louis XIV. This
French tapestry is lined and has a tunnel for ease of hanging.
