Flora

This tapestry was designed by William Morris (1834 - 1896) and Edward Burne-Jones (1833 - 1898) in 1885. It depicts Flora, the goddess of abundance, who personifies summer, standing barefoot in flowing garments with a wreath in her hair. She holds fresh flowers in her hand, and we can see the intricate floral background, inspired by the Medieval decorative technique known as Mille Fleurs (thousand flowers), demonstrating the artists' admiration for pre-Renaissance art. The piece is also inscribed with the following verse, beautifully rendered in Gothic type:

I am the handmaid of the Earth • I broider fair her glorious gown • and deck her on her days of mirth • with many a garland of renown • and while earth's little onesare fain • and play about the mother's hem • I scatter every gift I gain • from sun and wind to gladden them

This tapestry is lined and has a tunnel for ease of hanging.

Originally founded as Morris, Marshall, Faulkner & Co in 1861, Morris & Co were renowned for the design and production of very high quality decorative art. The range of works included textiles, tapestries and stained glass work, much of which still survives today. Founded on the Pre-Raphaelite principle of authenticity, William Morris embraced an ideal that viewed modern (i.e. 19th century) art as mere mass production, with none of the verve and dynamism of earlier approaches, in particular Medieval art, which they believed retained more of the artist's original personality in the work, lending it a uniqueness lost in mass production. All Morris tapestries should be seen in this light, and are a testament to craftsmanship, technique and discipline, as well as triumphing the artist above the process.
