Tree of life tapestry

The Tree of Life tapestry was designed by Morris & Co in the 19th century. On the piece we see an intricate pattern of leaves and branches, stemming from the central element, the Tree of Life, a common motif in many of Morris's works including other textiles as well as wallpaper patterns. The ornate and heavily detailed background in this tree of life tapestry was inspired by the Medieval decorative technique known as Mille Fleurs. Impressed by pre-Renaissance art Morris, and others who embraced the Pre-Raphaelite approach to art, were motivated by an unease with mass production, and preferred art to reflect more of the individuals involved, rather than the techniques used in production. It is for this reason that much of the Morris & Co work, most of which still survives, is so distinctive. This tapestry is lined and has a tunnel for ease of hanging.

Originally founded as Morris, Marshall, Faulkner & Co in 1861, Morris & Co were renowned for the design and production of very high quality decorative art. The range of works included textiles, tapestries and stained glass work, much of which still survives today. Founded on the Pre-Raphaelite principle of authenticity, William Morris embraced an ideal that viewed modern (i.e. 19th century) art as mere mass production, with none of the verve and dynamism of earlier approaches, in particular Medieval art, which they believed retained more of the artist's original personality in the work, lending it a uniqueness lost in mass production. All Morris tapestries should be seen in this light, and are a testament to craftsmanship, technique and discipline, as well as triumphing the artist above the process.
Please note that the 24"x19" size is the colouring shown on design s400-s which is the next item shown on the main William Morris tapestries page (it is a darker colouring). The larger sizes have the colouring shown above. The 24"x19" size is a basic weave whereas the larger ones are a high quality.
