This
tapestry was designed by noted Pre-Raphaelite artist Marianne Stokes (1855 - 1927). The name Ehret die frauen, meaning "Honour the women", was inspired by Friedrich von Schiller's 1796 poem Wurde der frauen (Woman's worth). Woven for Morris & Co by John Martin and Gorden Berry in 1912 it shows a group of figures representing (from left to right): Courage, Caring, Love, Wisdom and Fidelity. The verse, designed in gothic type, reads Ehret die frauen sie flechten und meben • himmlische rosen ins irdische leben (Honour the women, thy wife and weave heavenly roses into earthly life).
A good example of a Morris tapestry this piece is very detailed, employs vivid colors, and uses 20th century weaving techniques to capture some of the depth of expression many Pre-Raphaelite's admired in Medieval art. The original is on display at the Whitworth Art Gallery, Manchester, England. This tapestry is lined and has a tunnel for ease of hanging.
Originally founded as Morris, Marshall, Faulkner & Co in 1861, Morris & Co were renowned for the design and production of very high quality decorative art. The range of works included textiles, tapestries and stained glass work, much of which still survives today. Founded on the Pre-Raphaelite principle of authenticity, William Morris embraced an ideal that viewed modern (i.e. 19th century) art as mere mass production, with none of the verve and dynamism of earlier approaches, in particular Medieval art, which they believed retained more of the artist's original personality in the work, lending it a uniqueness lost in mass production. All Morris
tapestries should be seen in this light, and are a testament to craftsmanship, technique and discipline, as well as triumphing the artist above the process.
