St Michael Tapestry

This tapestry depicts Michael after he has defeated Satan, in the war over heaven. Highly detailed, this is a bold piece, which uses imagery that is greatly reflective of the work by William Blake. Michaels wings have been blackened by the fires of war. After a great battle, the Dragon now lies chained and held below Michael’s foot. Surely depicting the ultimate of humilities. This composition is clearly a narrative of Revelation 12:7 - 12:9; which describes how “There was a war in heaven”, In which Michael “fought against the dragon” (12:7), “But he was not strong enough” (12:8). Satan’s wings are scaled, not like Michaels. Clearly indicating that this is the “great dragon”, or “that ancient serpent called the devil”. As Satan is described in Revelations 12:9. In the composition, a serpent also lies with the devil. It can be seen on the left, on the very outer edge of the Tapestry. There are few references in the Bible, with regards to the actual battle between Satan, Michael, and their Angels. Apart from Revelations. However, it is made clear that Satan was beaten. This composition also makes that very clear, making it a very concise and powerful piece. This tapestry is lined and has a tunnel for ease of hanging.
