La Joute

La Joute tapestry wall hanging

This colorful tapestry depicts a scene that was very common in the medieval era, a jousting tournament. The first Jousting Tournament on record took place in 1066 and was accredited to a French man, Godfrey de Preuilly. During the 10th and 15th century jousting became increasingly popular in Europe and was favored by Kings and Noblemen alike. The tournaments provided the opportunity for Knights to keep themselves at their physical peak and to develop their fighting skills in preparation for war. In the early days of jousting the knights would often fight to the death but in later years, especially after The Statute of Arms for Tournaments Act of 1292, chivalry, showmanship and ceremony became more the order of the day. This tapestry is lined and has a tunnel for ease of hanging.
