Unicorn

Unicorn tapestry wall hanging

This beautiful tapestry depicts the legendary unicorn, a mythical and magical creature, which has provoked the imagination of artists for many centuries; especially within Europe and throughout the Asian continent. It is reminiscent of the legendary, ‘La Dame à la Licorne’ (The Lady and the Unicorn) and the ‘La Chasse de la Licorne’ (The Hunt of the Unicorn). Both of which, were produced at the end of the fifteenth century. Medieval in style, this tapestry is decorated with a Mille Fleurs background, which was classic of the Loire Valley workshops in France, during the fifteenth century. Later, during the sixteenth century, the Mille Fleurs design also became a speciality of the Flemish workshops. Medieval tapestries always depicted some kind of narrative, usually, religious or of mythological themes. This tapestry uses highly typical, symbolic, imagery, which greatly reflects the medieval style. Legend says that the unicorn can only be tamed by a virgin; it also represents chastity and purity. Within the Christian religion, the unicorn was often regarded as a symbol of Christ. This Tapestry is lined and has a tunnel for ease of hanging.
