Icon Madonna Tapestry

This tapestry depicts the Madonna and Child and was inspired by an early Russian artwork of the same name. Images of the Madonna and child date from the early Christian Church and are found in the catacombs of Rome. The Madonna was the most often produced image through the thousand years that represented the Byzantine, Medieval and Early Renaissance periods. Both images and sculptures of the Madonna and Child have achieved fame due to their intrinsic artistic qualities and also religious adoration. Some of the world’s greatest artists (both painters and sculptors) have used their skills in the creation of Madonna images. These artists include, Henry Moore, Salvador Dali, Rubens, Carravaggio, Duccio, Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci. The term Madonna dates from medieval times and was first coined in Italy to describe a noble or otherwise important woman and has long since been used in reference to images of the virgin, Mary, mother of Jesus. Strictly speaking, the term "Madonna" should be used exclusively for Italian works, but has become applied much more widely. The half length image depicted in this image is typical of the Eastern Orthodox Church and also Italian Renaissance paintings. The rich use of antique gold reminds us of Byzantine art, which was produced across the Roman Empire, until Constantinople finally fell around 1453.
