The Kiss

This Oriental tapestry is based on the most famous art work by Gustav Klimt, (1862 – 1918) and depicts a couple, in various shades of gold and symbols, embracing and sharing a kiss against a bronze colored background. ‘Der Kuss or The Kiss as it came to be known was produced during Klimt’s Golden Period and is probably his best known work. Klimt travelled little but trips to Venice and Ravenna, both famous for their beautiful mosaics, are the most likely inspiration for his gold technique and his Byzantine imagery. In this scene we see the two figures standing at the edge of a flowering slope. The man is wearing a neutral colored rectangle patterned gown with a crown of vines; the woman is wearing a brightly colored tangent circle patterned gown and has flowers in her hair. The couple’s embrace is enveloped by triangular vining and a veil of concentric circles. What is interesting about this piece is that very little of the couple’s bodies are shown. For the main the painting dissolves into shimmering, extravagant flat patterning. This patterning has clear ties to Art Nouveau and to the Arts and Crafts movement and also evokes the conflict between two- and three-dimensionality intrinsic to the work of Degas and other modernists. Paintings such as The Kiss were visual manifestations of fin-de-siècle spirit because they capture a decadence conveyed by opulent and sensuous images. This tapestry is lined and has a tunnel for ease of hanging .
