Madonna and Child Tapestry
This Chenille tapestry depicts the Madonna and Child. Images of the Madonna and Madonna and Child are one of the central icons of Roman Catholicism and Eastern Orthodox Christianity, representing the Madonna, i.e. Mary, mother of Jesus, by herself or, rather more often, with her son Jesus. After some initial resistance and controversy, the formula Theotokos ("Mother of God") was adopted officially by the Christian Church at the Council of Ephesus in 431, beginning the period of over a thousand years when images of Mary were central to Western art. This tapestry is lined and has a tunnel for ease of hanging. Chenille is a popular fabric and has many uses. As a soft and supple material it can be used for a variety of purposes, including; tapestries and wall-hangings, throws, bed covers, upholstery and curtains. Chenille can be difficult to manufacture and takes a great deal of care in its production. The thread is produced by weaving fabric into tightly twisted yarns which are then combined with shorter yarns to provide a pile that protrudes in all directions, giving the final material its distinctive chenille feel and flexibility. These are then used in the normal way to produce the finished fabric. Many fabrics can be used in this process although these are typically: cotton, silk, wool, viscose, polypropylene or acrylic.
