La Prise de Lille

This tapestry is a reproduction of one of the L'Histoire du Roi (the history of the King) series of tapestries, commissioned to celebrate the life of Louis XIV (1638 - 1715), the Sun King. The scene depicts the king surveying the city of Lille shortly after its capture in August 1667 flanked by his military commander, Turenne, and chief military engineer, Vauban. The city was under control of the Spanish and its fall signified Louis' ambitions to invade the Spanish Netherlands.

The war against Spain (1667 - 1668), which would in time become known as the War of Devolution (Guerre de Dévolution), was a result of the king marrying Maria Theresa who had claim to the sovreignty of the Low Countries. At the time of his succession to the throne France enjoyed a position of considerable power within Europe and Louis XIV would seek to extend his influence throughout his reign. The war would trigger a series of victories over surrounding territories that served to secure his place in history as one of the great sovereigns, and the 17th century would be forever seen as the pinnacle of France's success as a monarchy. In time his desire to extend France's influence would ruin the country's finances and its position within Europe. Louis XIV was destined to live long enough to see his beloved country fail to match the might of the growing British and Dutch empires and bankrupt itself in a series of ruinous and ill advised wars and disputes.

This tapestry is lined and has tunnel for ease of hanging .
