Travailler les laines

Travailler les laines tapestry wall hanging

Typical of its time this piece shows the Travailler les laines, or working of the wool, in the Loire Valley during the early 16th century. In medieval times this was an important time of year, typically July after the harvest in June. The scene depicts Thomas Bohier (d. 1524), adviser and minister to Charles VIII and his successor, Louis XII.

Although an important and wealthy nobleman like Bohier would not have been involved directly with the supervision of manual labor, it shows the tendency for tapestries and textiles to be used as a means of communication during Medieval times, and work like this is a useful source of information to historians and enthusiasts.

Given the importance of this work in French art there are many cheap reproductions of this piece, each offering different levels of detail and authenticity. The one we stock, detailed above, is believed to be the best match to the original dating from 1520, which can be found in the Louvre in Paris. This tapestry is lined and has a tunnel for ease of hanging.
