This tapestry is based on an original design for a portiere curtain found in the Palace of Versailles of the 18th century. Designed in the Directoire style popular during the 1790's it features a pair of ornate vases each with a complex floral bouquet. Between them is another flower arrangement with additional features including exotic birds and a background of small flowers, as well as an ornate border that finishes the piece. This tapestry is lined and has a tunnel for ease of hanging.
The Directoire style encompassed interior decor, furniture, fashion and art, and was a conscious move away from the ostentatious style of decoration that characterized previous periods in France's approach to art, and typically had a more severe look and functional appearance. That said, the above piece, typical of the style, contains an incredible amount of detail and although less extravagant than previous styles would be considered quite spectacular and ornate by today's standards.
