This tapestry is from an original painting by Francesco Guardi (1712 - 1793). Rich in texture it shows a typical scene from 18th century Venice, with a group of merchants disembarking from a Galleon. The skill of the piece is mainly in the detail, from the colors of the merchants clothing, to the sails caught in the wind, even the people who populate the edges of the painting. This tapestry is lined and has a tunnel for ease of hanging.
From a family of talented artists, Guardi is now regarded its most famous member, despite living his own life in almost total obscurity and poverty. He is best known for his vedute, his view paintings, where he would paint detailed panoramic vistas like the tapestry above. In fact he is seen as Venice's most celebrated painter of views despite the fact he produced work on a wide range of subjects and only concentrated on views near the end of his career. As he was a working painter, rather than a celebrated artist, he was enormously prolific during his lifetime, and his works can be seen in many collections throughout Europe and the UK.
