Lake Como (temple)
This tapestry is inspired by one of a series of three paintings from the 17th century. Often misattributed to Francois Boucher they were in actual fact by an unknown artist. Providing the inspiration for the tapestry above they romanticise the beautiful lakeside retreat of the Villa d'Este, found on the banks of Lake Como in Italy. With expansive views and classical architecture set amongst the tranquility of Lake Como this idyllic setting has provided inspiration for generations of artists right up to the modern day. The tapestry above shows the elegant temple found amongst the grounds at the villa. It demonstrates the attention to detail seen throughout the Villa d'Este as well as the ambition of the original architects.
The Villa d'Este is a testament to the taste and sensibilities of the Renaissance, and remains to this day an outstanding example of the cultural achievments of the era's architects and artists. Its gardens were known as giardini delle meraviglie (garden of wonders), and are matched only by the impressive architecture. This tapestry is lined and has a tunnel for ease of hanging.
