This piece is from the famous Months of Lucas series of tapestries dating from the 18th century. Copied from paintings and cartoons by Gobelins the works are often incorrectly attributed to Dutch artist Lucas van Leyden (1494 - 1533). It is believed they were inspired by the work of a number of artists and in the style of the day "enhanced" by Gobelins own artists and weavers. The scene shows Les Patineurs (the skaters) enjoying a cold afternoon skating on a frozen lake. The tapestry, woven in 1770, is rich in detail and demonstrates the skill of the Gobelins weavers and artists in capturing the color and ambience of even complex, detailed paintings. The original can now be seen in the Elysée Palace, the residence used by the President of France to welcome foreign dignitaries. This tapestry is lined and has tunnel for ease of hanging.
